Proposed Idea - Graffiti
When we went up to London to do some iconography location scouting for our video (at the earliest part of our planning where we had no idea what we wanted to do) we visited Brick Lane. It is a very quirky street near Liverpool Street Station with indie shops (like a massive vinyl store) and a lot of really cool grafitti. We came across a park which had amazing graffiti all over it and it gave us some inspiration for a music video idea. Fast forward to now, we actually abandoned that idea pretty early due to not being able to build upon it easily - it was a light-bulb idea that we couldn't fully flesh out. Despite this, I thought showing some of the pictures we took could act as a kind of 'growth' blog post, somewhat of a 'what could have been' statement. The idea was to have different graffiti being the background of the whole video and using that to portray an artistic story through the connotations the images might have. You may be able to see the problem with this. Nonetheless, here are some images and the connotations that we attached to them.
This first image includes the main character for our video standing next to a graffiti of some kind of hideous animal. This animal connoted to us the idea of insecurity, due to its unattractive looks. Its black and white colouration shows a general contrast, connoting the idea of binary opposition (black vs white, good vs evil, beauty vs ugliness).
This graffiti is of Mr Meeseeks from Rick and Morty. The idea we had from this was related to how humanity is controlled by the media - with pop culture icons popping up in street art. Also, the writing here is indecipherable which adds a sense of mystery to the art piece. The colouration is also bright but is blue, which can connote the idea of temperature or feelings like depression and anxiety.
We liked this piece of art because of its vibrant colours, which contrasted with the previous image. It shows another pop culture icon, this time from the Final Fantasy games. The way the text is designed gives an abnormal feel but it is more readable for an audience. There is also a number shown in the bottom left, which could allow for the idea of numerical values to be repeated throughout the video.
This was by far my favourite piece of graffiti. It is an image of a white wolf cub. The image itself is kind of fluid, you can see the ear of the cub is almost melting away. On their head is the skull of a bird, attached with string. The facial expression of the cub suggests sadness or fear or longing. The idea I derived from this was that the cub is a survivor but due to their survival instinct its will to live is fading away, represented by the melting aesthetic. Its face of longing connotes the idea that the cub is reminiscing of the life it has left behind or is dreaming about the life that it could have led.
