Textual Reflection On Questionnaire
The first question that we asked was what people's favourite music genre was. As expected we received a variety of different answers, but some were more common than others. The ones that we picked out were; Pop, Rock and Rap. From this result we can see that our genre is liked by a large quantity of people; which is a good sign for the size of our audience.
The next two questions that we asked provided us with ideas of people's favourite artists and their favourite music videos from these artists. Whilst this doesn't directly help us, it did give us some insight into popular artists and gave us some music videos to look at. For example, we heard about artists like Logic, Fifth Harmony, DJ Khaled, Twenty One Pilots, Beartooth, Ed Sheeran and Adele. Some music videos that stood out to us were; Logic's 1-800, Twenty One Pilots' Stressed Out, Ed Sheeran's Lego House and Adele's Rolling in the Deep. These videos gave us some ideas for themes and shots; and also whether or not we should use colour grading and letterboxing; and finally whether the music videos are performance or narrative based.
The fourth and fifth questions asked our audience what they liked about the above music videos and what they thought made a memorable music video. Mostly we heard things like 'because they were memorable' or 'because it was emotional'. These replies gave us a very good idea of what we need to do in our music video for people to love it.
The sixth question was similar to the third, talking about Music Videos, except this time it was about how memorable they are. Commonplace music videos were; Logic's 1-800, Jaime Lawson's Wasn't Expecting That, Hozier's Take Me To Church, GOTYE's Somebody That I Used To Know and Johnny Cash's Hurt. All of these videos are easy to distinguish as to why they are memorable; they are often innovative or very emotive; something we hope to show in our video.
When asking about whether people preferred Performance or Narrative, it was basically an even split. What we did see was that people who chose Rock as one of their favourite genres lent more towards performance, as this is one of the conventions of that genre. The split identified to us that choosing to mix both elements in a fluid way is the correct choice.
People also seemed to like the idea of letterboxing, which is another good sign as this is something that we wanted to incorporate into our video due to its more cinematic and professional look (tying into our narrative aspects).
Finally, a lot of people suggested that aesthetically pleasing shots are more preferable than narrative; which is something we will have to find a happy balance between in order to convey our story but also be visually appealing to a wide audience. However, I am looking forward to being as experimental with our shots as possible.
All in all, this questionnaire has taught us a lot about what people want to see; that of which we will be discussing in our first focus group. ,
